CAFTA On Hold as Signatories Miss Deadline


WASHINGTON, DC – 01/01/06 – Implementation of the Central American Free Trade Agreement will have to wait at least a month or two as the six Latin American signatory nations to the pact – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic – have missed today’s deadline to complete the mandated requirements to set the agreement in motion; the US will implement the pact "on a rolling basis" as the signatory countries ''make sufficient progress to complete their commitments'' under the terms of the trade agreement.


China's Economy Larger Than First Thought


BEIJING, China – 12/29/05 – China’s economy is less export-reliant and much larger than previously reported with impressive growth in the service sector energizing a 16.8% surge in the country’s output in 2004, according to new figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics; the figures were released at the same time a new Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development report states that China surpassed the US in 2004 as the world’s leading exporter of high-tech goods like laptop computers, mobile phones, and digital cameras.
