PORT OF STOCKTON EXPANDS ITS FTZ

STOCKTON – 12/05/08 – The Port of Stockton has received approval from the US Dept. of Commerce (DOC) Foreign Trade Zones Board for expansion of its Foreign Trade Zone No. 231.

The expansion at the nearly 475-acre Opus Logistics Center in East Stockton is the eighth site approved in Stockton by the DOC and is sited adjacent to the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad line linking Central California with points throughout the country.

According to the port, the approval is particularly timely as it coincides with the completion of the a new 736,000 square foot distribution warehouse on the site, the largest facility of its kind built on speculation in Northern California.

The Foreign Trade Zone program was created by Congress in 1934 as part of a stimulus package to assist the country during of the Great Depression and has evolved and expanded through the years and is an important strategy in global businesses locating facilities in the US.

The Port of Stockton is a deep-water port located 75 nautical miles east of San Francisco Bay at the confluence of the San Joaquin River and the Stockton Ship Channel, within 1.5 miles of Interstate 5.

The entire port area includes more than 2,000 cumulative acres of industrial properties, which is supported by 15,000 lineal feet of dock, more than seven million square feet of covered storage and serviced by both the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads.
