Welcome to California and welcome to the
CalTrade Report, the only dedicated source for news and
information on what's happening and how it affects you in the world's
fifth-largest economy.
California is, quite literally, a country within a
country, and twice-monthly the CalTrade Report opens the window for you on
the news and developments that impact how you do business in the Golden
state. Click here for a sample edition.
From Crescent City in the north to Otay Mesa in the
south, from its vineyards and citrus groves to its high-technology
laboratories and motion picture studios, California offers the world a
$1.35 trillion economy exporting $107 billion in computer products,
agricultural commodities, manufactured goods, high-tech and environmental
equipment, electronics, chemicals, and scores of other products and
services in 2001.
From north to south and east to west, California
manifests all that is "international" in America's burgeoning global
economy.
- In 2001, California produced a full 25% of the country's computer equipment and currently is home to one-third of all US-based biotechnology firms;
- Last year, Orange County companies generated $18 billion in exports;
- Every day in season, the Blue Diamond Company in Sacramento delivers 12 million pounds of almonds for shipment around the globe;
- The state is the home of three of the nation's five busiest ports - Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Oakland. Those deep-water ports handle millions of containers of inbound and outbound cargo every year with projections forecasting double-digit volume growth over the next decade, while California's smaller niche ports - Redwood City, Port Hueneme, Stockton, San Diego, Sacramento, and a dozen others - serve as global gateways for a myriad of products such as steel, automobiles, agricultural produce, chemicals, and other bulk cargoes;
- The Fall River Valley in Shasta County produces 25% of the wild rice marketed in the entire world;
- More cotton is produced - and exported from - Kern County than anywhere else in the country;
- The US ranks as the fifth-ranked producer of wine in the world with California producing 92% of total US production; and on and on and on...
