DISNEY MULLS SHANGHAI THEME PARK

BURBANK - 11/14/03 - Shanghai city officials are reportedly in discussions with The Walt Disney Company about the possibility of opening a Disney theme park in the Chinese port city.

A research team of Shanghai city officials and Disney executives has been formed to study not only the theme park option, but other business relationships, as well, according to Irene Chan, a Hong Kong-based spokeswoman for Disney.

A theme park  "is one of a number of business options, including movies and television programming, that the company routinely discusses with Chinese authorities in a continuing dialogue," she said.

The Burbank-headquartered company is focusing now on building its park in Hong Kong, which is scheduled to open in late 2005 or early 2006, Chan said, adding that, while Disney is considering various Chinese cities for another park, the entertainment giant is unlikely to start on any new project before 2010.

Shanghai and executives from Disney rival Universal Studios signed an agreement last December to build a theme park due to open in 2006 in Pudong, just east of Shanghai. The park will reportedly feature a mix of Hollywood and traditional Chinese themes.

Industry analysts say the Shanghai park would give Universal an edge over Disney in the booming Chinese tourism market, and could draw visitors from other wealthy coastal areas who might otherwise travel to Hong Kong to visit the Disney park.

In addition to the Associated Press, reports of meetings between Disney executives and the Shanghai city government were also reported in the official English-language China Daily newspaper.
