CORRECTION AND CLARIFICATION

(Re: "And the Bills Just Keep on Coming…," CalTrade Report, 03/10/04)

To the Editor:

Your publication erroneously reported that Senator Hollingsworth's Senate Bill 1857 would establish an international trade and investment office in Yerevan, Armenia.

This is incorrect. The text of SB 1857 reads as follows:

"It is the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation to provide for international trade offices on behalf of the state through public-private partnerships."

Senator Hollingsworth's bill does not address any specific trade office in any specific nation. Instead, the bill language aims to explore international trade offices through public-private partnerships.

In the description of the bill, provided by the Legislative Council's office, it is noted that "existing law authorizes the Secretary of Business, Transportation and Housing to establish an international trade and investment office in Yerevan, Armenia."

Please note that it is the established practice of the Legislative Council when describing legislation to quote existing law in the related areas that the bill aims to address, prior-to their description of the bill in question, hence the mention of existing trade language relating to Armenia.

As a Republican and a free market conservative, Senator Hollingsworth is a supporter of international trade.

The Senator also feels that private enterprise including private dollars, not taxpayer dollars, is the most efficient path to expanded trade and economic stimulus.  Utilizing the talents of private sector to advance international trade clearly makes the most sense.

It is our hope that as the bill makes its way through the legislative process that goal will be realized.

Sincerely,

Dan Brennan
Communications Director
Office of State Senator Dennis Hollingsworth (R-36th District)
