FRESNO TO EXPAND AIR CARGO CAPABILITY

FRESNO - 05/20/04 - Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FYI) anticipates the completion of six new cargo aircraft stations this summer, according to Fred Burkhardt, director of the City of Fresno's Department of Economic Development.

The FYI features a 10,000 foot runway; certification for all-weather operations; facilities open "24/7/365;" a modern US Customs facility nearby; "green" cargo ramps; a "no-slot" system for expedited aircraft loading and unloading; and the capability of handling B747-R400 aircraft.

According to Burkhardt, Evergreen International Airlines - a dedicated cargo carrier based in McMinnville, Oregon - will be the first airline to utilize the expanded airfreight facilities.

The airport, he said, is adjacent to several major industrial parks, warehousing, and distribution centers, a Foreign Trade Zone, and is located no more than a 1-day truck drive from major West Coast markets via access to three major freeways - the 99, the 180, and the 168.

Both the Union Pacific (UP) and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroads serve Fresno with the BNSF alone handling 60 trains a day in and out of the area.

FYI is also located near a California Empowerment Zone and a California Enterprise Zone, both of which offer business incentives including tax credits for hiring, sales or use tax, business expense deductions, tax exempt bond financing, and bonus points for federal contracts, Burkhardt added.

The airport expansion, he said, "will establish FYI as the strategic logistics hub for Central California companies looking for a well-positioned gateway to overseas markets" calling the project "a significant component of plans to make Fresno a major player in California's continuing international growth."
