ADVANCED MICRO DEVICES SETS UP CHINA SUBSIDIARY
SUNNYVALE - 06/05/04 - Advanced Micro Devices has set up a new subsidiary - AMD (China), based in the Zhongguancun Science Park in Beijing - to manage the company's investments in China, including its recently announced AMD Technologies (China) and operations in Hong Kong.
 The new setup in China is expected to boost the chipmaker's research and development efforts, production and sales there offering services such as training, engineering support, systems integration and software development.
The new AMD facility, which will occupy approximately 35,000 square feet and is expected to be in operation and volume production in the fourth quarter of this year.
Approximately 300 employees are expected to be hired locally to staff the facility.
AMD recently began offering 64-bit computing to the Chinese market and earlier this year announced investments worth $100 million to expand testing and manufacturing facilities in the country. The company also reportedly plans to open branch offices in Shanghai and Shenzhen.
AMD has manufacturing facilities in the US, Europe, Japan and Asia, and sales offices in major cities around the globe and registered revenues of approximately $3.5 billion in 2003.
The Zhongguancun Science Park is known as China's Silicon Valley and is home to more than 1,300 foreign companies or joint ventures, including branch offices or research and development centers for 55 "Fortune 500" companies.
According to high-tech market researcher IDC, China's personal computer shipments totaled 13.3 million units last year, an 18% jump from 2002.
An overall drop in computer prices and large-scale government and education sector projects were cited as the main reasons for China's PC boom, IDC said.

SAN FRANCISCO – 09/29/06 – Fashion marketer Guess? has inked a manufacturing and marketing joint venture agreement with Mexico’s Grupo Axo; the Mexico City-based company will engage in the production, wholesale distribution and retail sale of Guess? fashion apparel, accessories and other related products throughout the country.
GOOGLE BELGIUM TAKEN TO COURT
BRUSSELS, Belgium – 09/20/06 – Internet search engine Google has been ordered to cease reproducing articles from French-language publications in the news sections of its Belgian website; the court order threatens the company with a fine of $1.3 million daily if it does not comply.
NEW OAKLAND INTERMODAL FACILITY PLANNED
OAKLAND – 09/11/06 – The 425-acre former Oakland Army Base will be converted into the Port of Oakland’s newest intermodal rail yard under the terms of an agreement reached between the port and several local and state government agencies; the planned OHIT – or Outer Harbor Intermodal Terminal – is expected to significantly reduce container transfer times, increase throughput, and reduce truck traffic in and around the port when completed within the next several years.
INTEL MAY LAYOFF THOUSANDS
SANTA CLARA – 09/04/06 – Chipmaker Intel is reportedly planning to announce a massive layoff within weeks that could eliminate as many as 10,000 jobs or one-tenth of the company’s total global workforce; the move was spurred by several financially disappointing quarters and the results of an internal corporate analysis conducted in April.
