GERMAN COMPANY TO ACQUIRE CAL-BASED HIGH TECH FIRM
SUNNYVALE - 07/16/04 - Semiconductor equipment maker Genus Inc. has announced it will be acquired by Aixtron AG of Frankfurt, Germany by the end of the year.
The swap deal is valued at $143 million deal and will make Genus a wholly-owned subsidiary of the German company.
Old Aixtron shareholders will reportedly hold a 74% share of Aixtron after the deal, while Genus shareholders will own the remaining 26%, said a spokesman for the California-based firm. Genus, whose revenues reflect investment cycles in the volatile chip industry, had already noted increasing demand when it posted first-quarter results last month. It still plans to report detailed second-quarter results on August 5, the spokesman said.
Aixtron is the world's leading maker of gas-plating systems for silicon wafers eventually used to produce chips for LED (light-emitting diode) displays in multimedia phones and laptops - which have recently enjoyed a boom in demand.
Established in 1981, Genus Inc. designs, manufactures and markets capital equipment and deposition processes for advanced semiconductor manufacturing as well as for other, emerging non-semiconductor applications.
In addition to its headquarters facility in Sunnyvale, Genus also operates service offices in Korea, Japan and Taiwan, and several sales offices worldwide.
