CUNARD TO RELOCATE US HQ TO CALIFORNIA

MIAMI - 08/01/04 - Luxury cruise operator Cunard Line Ltd. will relocate its US headquarters from Miami to Santa Clarita, California in a reorganization expected to save about $20 million annually and affect about 300 jobs.

According to parent company Carnival Corp. & PLC, Cunard - operator of the Queen Mary 2 - employs about 300 people in Miami.

At least 120 of the company's employees will be offered jobs at other Carnival lines in Miami or relocate along with Cunard to the new California headquarters, home to sister company Princess Cruises.

The remaining employees will be offered severance packages.

Carnival is the world's largest cruise company, and the move is part of an overall reorganization following its merger with P&O Princess last year. One-time costs for the move of $10 million to $15 million are expected to be charged mainly over the rest of the year.

Seabourn Cruise Line will remain in Miami, where it has shared offices with Cunard.

Cunard is one of the oldest names in the global shipping industry and its history can be read as the story of steam navigation on the North Atlantic.

The company was founded in 1839 by Samuel Cunard and began its first transatlantic service the following year with four small paddle-wheel steamers offering passage between Liverpool and Boston.

Over the years, some of the most famous ships ever to sail wore the company's distinctive funnel colors - the Caronia, the sisters Mauretania and Lusitania, the Aquitania (thought by many to be the most beautiful ocean liner ever built), the  Carpathia, the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mary, and, most recently, the Queen Elizabeth 2.
