UK ARREST IN CISCO THEFT CASE
SAN JOSE - 10/04/04 - An unidentified 20-year old man has been arrested in England on charges that he stole the proprietary blueprints and specifications used in Cisco System Inc.'s networking equipment.
The man, who has not yet been formally charged and has been released on bail, was arrested on suspicion of violating the Computer Misuse Act of 1990 about three weeks ago, according to a spokesman for Scotland Yard in London.
The theft, which reportedly occurred earlier this year, was first made public in early May. The investigation is ongoing, but additional details on the case and the actual arrest were not available, the spokesman said. About 800 megabytes of the software blueprint, or source code, for Cisco's Internetwork Operating System (IOS) appeared on a Russian website in May, but it was quickly removed at the company's request.
The company said the theft was not the result of a software or service vulnerability, adding that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was also investigating the theft.
The software breach is the second time this year a prominent technology company has faced an embarrassing disclosure of its source code, according to press sources. In February, some pieces of Microsoft Corp.'s proprietary blueprints for several versions of its popular MS Windows programs were circulating on the Internet.
