FEDEX PLANS OAKLAND SOLAR POWER SYSTEM
OAKLAND - 10/29/04 - FedEx Express has said it will construct California's largest corporate solar electric system atop its hub at Oakland International Airport.
The 904-kilowatt solar array will provide approximately 80% of the peak  load demand for the company's Oakland facility, which employs 1,700 people.
FedEx's solar generation system will cover 81,000 square feet on the roofs of two buildings. Sunlight will be converted directly into electricity by 5,769 photovoltaic modules, comprised of more than 300,000 solar cells from Sharp, the world's leading producer of solar technology.
According to a company press release, FedEx will fly the solar cells, manufactured in Japan, to Sharp's assembly facility in Memphis, Tennessee, to be assembled into modules. FedEx Freight will then truck the assembled modules to the Bay Area.
The Oakland solar project will be designed and built by Berkeley-based PowerLight Corporation, a manufacturer and supplier of large-scale solar electric systems.
The electricity generated by the FedEx Oakland solar electric system will be the equivalent used by more than 900 homes during the daytime.
The Oakland solar project is the second major FedEx environmental innovation in California this year, the release said.
In March, FedEx Express in Sacramento became the first company to make a long-term commitment to develop and use hybrid electric delivery trucks, developed in partnership with Environmental Defense and the Eaton Corp.
The FedEx OptiFleet E700 diesel-electric hybrid trucks will be rolled out in additional US cities later this year.
Completion of the Oakland project is expected in May 2005.

BRUSSELS, Belgium – 09/20/06 – Internet search engine Google has been ordered to cease reproducing articles from French-language publications in the news sections of its Belgian website; the court order threatens the company with a fine of $1.3 million daily if it does not comply.
NEW OAKLAND INTERMODAL FACILITY PLANNED
OAKLAND – 09/11/06 – The 425-acre former Oakland Army Base will be converted into the Port of Oakland’s newest intermodal rail yard under the terms of an agreement reached between the port and several local and state government agencies; the planned OHIT – or Outer Harbor Intermodal Terminal – is expected to significantly reduce container transfer times, increase throughput, and reduce truck traffic in and around the port when completed within the next several years.
INTEL MAY LAYOFF THOUSANDS
SANTA CLARA – 09/04/06 – Chipmaker Intel is reportedly planning to announce a massive layoff within weeks that could eliminate as many as 10,000 jobs or one-tenth of the company’s total global workforce; the move was spurred by several financially disappointing quarters and the results of an internal corporate analysis conducted in April.
