CAL FIRM BOOSTS EUROPEAN WINE PROFILE

IRVINE - 11/24/04 - The California-based Scholle Corp. has acquired all of the shares of Flextainer, a French packaging company, with the move expected to increase the company's presence in the European boxed-wine packaging category.

The business will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Scholle and continue to trade as Flextainer at its headquarters in Schalbach, near Strasbourg, France, according to a company press release.

Flextainer specializes in the development and manufacture of systems and accessories for liquid packaging, particularly in the highly-competitive wine industry.

Among its many accomplishments are the first automated system to insert plastic handles in wine cartons, development of several of the world's most popular wine box taps, and the commercialization of a "form-seal-fill" technology for bag making, filling, and carton loading.

Scholle pioneered the development of "bag-in-box" packaging for food, beverage and industrial products with operations at 13 locations in seven countries.

The company now employs over 2,000 staff world-wide and supplies packaging products such as bag-in-box packaging, metallized plastics and paper to markets that include North and Latin America, the Asia Pacific region, and Europe.

In Europe, Scholle already has five manufacturing sites: one in The Netherlands and three in the UK together with the newly-acquired Strasbourg facility.

According to industry analysts, although boxed wine has suffered from an association with cheaper wines, it is continuing to grow in popularity, and is increasingly being used to package quality wines.

In Australia the majority of wine sold continues to be packaged in boxes, while in Norway boxed wine has carved out a 40% niche in the country's total wine market.
