LBCT CONVERTS EQUIPMENT TO NEW FUEL
LONG BEACH - 12/13/04 - Long Beach Container Terminal Inc. (LBCT) is reportedly converting all of its diesel-powered yard equipment to a newly developed and cleaner burning oxygenated diesel fuel.
The new fuel is expected to reduce particulate emissions by as much as 46% and carbon monoxide emissions by 30%.
The company is the first major container terminal operator to convert its equipment to the new fuel.
More than 60 pieces of heavy equipment used to handle cargo containers at the facility will be using the new fuel within the next two months.
Once fully converted, the terminal is expected to consume approximately 600,000 gallons annually of the cleaner burning O2Diesel fuel.
The new fuel was developed by O2Diesel Corporation of Newark, Delaware and reportedly reduces harmful emissions without loss of power and performance.
The benefits of the fuel have been verified by the California Air Resources Board, which qualifies it as an "alternative diesel fuel."
In addition to LBCT's conversion to O2Diesel, the company has installed diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) on all of its yard equipment, which include top handlers, side handlers, and rubber tired gantry cranes.
The equipment, similar to catalytic converters on passenger vehicles, reduces emissions from diesel-powered equipment.
In addition, the terminal company is participating in a program to test liquefied natural gas (LNG) on some heavy equipment, including its five gantry cranes, early next year.
The 105-acre LBCT facility is one of the largest at the Port of Long Beach and serves several major transpacific ocean carriers including Hapag Lloyd, NYK, P&ONedlloyd, and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL).
