
LINUX MEDIA TO OPEN CANADIAN FACILITY
BURBANK – 12/22/06 – Media production software developer Linux Media Arts Inc. (LMA) has formed a partnership with the Government of Manitoba, Canada, to open a new Open Source product research and development center in Winnipeg that will assist California-based global media companies wanting to penetrate Canadian and international markets. The new Manitoba Media Centre (MMC) is being capitalized with a combined investment of $20 million from the Provincial Government of Manitoba, Canada and LMA. According to a media release, the facility will distribute LMA’s Open Source software for the Linux Operating System; further develop and refine the software’s media management applications and tools; and carry out extensive research and development of the software’s media management and archiving tools.
The Manitoba Media Centre will also support Canada’s indigenous Misipawistik First Nation – formerly known as the Grand Rapids First Nation – in the development of their knowledge economy, and work with Red River College to explore training opportunities in the entertainment engineering field which would leverage the experience of LMA's network of professionals.
The MMC will also partner in research and development projects with the Experimental Media Centre at the University of Manitoba.
The new Centre will release technologies at key broadcasting and media events and reportedly issue a call for White Papers to be presented at the Open Source Media Technology Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the fall of 2007.

BNSF, VICTORVILLE TO EXPLORE INTERMODAL PROJECT

VICTORVILLE – 02/02/07 – The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and the Southern California city of Victorville have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to study the development of a 3,500-acre intermodal facility at the Southern California Logistics Airport; the complex would include plans for the construction of 20 million square feet of manufacturing and distribution and be expected to generate approximately 20,000 jobs.

LONG BEACH BREAKS CONTAINER CARGO RECORD

LONG BEACH – 01/25/07 – The Port of Long Beach handled a record 7.3 million containers last year marking a fifth-straight year of record-breaking cargo activity; the cargo surge in 2006 was driven by continued US demand for products manufactured in Asia and increased vessel capacity supplied by the new generation of 8,000-TEU container ships.

SOLAR INTEGRATED INKS TESCO CONTRACT

LOS ANGELES – 01/22/07 – Solar Integrated Technologies has won a $13 million contract to build the world’s largest roof-top solar panel system on the new Tesco USA distribution center in the San Bernardino County community of Riverside, about 50 miles east of Los Angeles; Tesco USA is the subsidiary of Tesco Plc, Britain’s largest food retailer.

GOOGLE PARTNERS WITH CHINESE SERVICE PROVIDERS

SAN FRANCISCO – 01/05/07 – Google and Shenzhen-headquartered Xunlei Network Technology company have reportedly forged a strategic partnership to serve consumers in China, the world's second-largest Internet market; Xunlei offers music and video file-sharing services, claiming more than 120 million users and attracting more than 50 million visitors a day.

UC DAVIS TO ADVISE ON IRAQ’S AG SECTOR

DAVIS – 12/26/06 – The University of California - Davis and four other US universities will receive a $5.3 million grant to develop a network of advisors to help in the revitalization of Iraq’s agricultural sector; experts from the school will reportedly train Iraqi nationals in strategies for developing high-value fruit and vegetable production.
