BioMed Realty Trust Inc. has acquired additional properties in San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area with a total value of approximately $29.2 million. The acquisitions increase the company's real estate portfolio to 19 properties, representing 36 buildings with approximately 2.8 million rentable square feet. The newly acquired San Diego property is located on Waples Street in the Sorrento Mesa submarket, an area with more than 80% of San Diego's biotechnology companies. The Waples property was acquired through a majority owned joint venture. It contains a building with approximately 43,000 rentable square feet of space, which will be expanded and redeveloped through the joint venture. The property was purchased for approximately $5.3 million in cash. As anticipated, BioMed acquired the third building at its Bridgeview property in Hayward, California for approximately $16.2 million in cash. Ten programs in the Social Sciences and two in the Humanities at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) have been ranked in the Top Ten in the country, according to an annual survey of graduate programs to be released by U.S. News and World Report. According to the magazine, the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering ranks 11th among 179 engineering schools and the UCSD School of Medicine ranks 14th in the category of research-focused medical schools and seventh in primary care among 123 medical schools. Both schools rank 6th in the nation among public universities in their professional school categories. The Jacobs School of Engineering and the School of Medicine both rank second in the nation for research expenditures per faculty member. Total federal, state and industry research support at the School of Medicine is $242 million and at the Jacobs School is $138.3 million. All five of the Jacobs Schools academic departments had graduate programs ranked in the top 20 including the Department of Bioengineering, which ranked second in the nation for biomedical and bioengineering.
