ALAMEDA CORRIDOR SEES INCREASED VOLUME
LOS ANGELES - 01/14/05 - Reflecting the surge in cargo moving through Southern California, the Alameda Corridor continues to see increasing train traffic.
According to the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority (ACTA), traffic moving along the 20-mile-long dedicated freight rail expressway peaked in October when the it averaged 48.4 trains a day, up 19.6% from the same month a year ago.
During the month, Burlington Northern & Santa Fe and Union Pacific trains moving between the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and the intermodal facilities near downtown Los Angeles carried the equivalent of 6,280 forty-foot containers.
That, said ACTA, means that the Corridor removed 200 truck trips a day from the Long Beach (710) Freeway and other roadways linking the waterfront and inland rail yards. The Corridor reportedly averaged 43.3 trains a day last year, up 8.6% over 2003, the agency said.
