HYUNDAI OPENS SOCAL TEST FACILITY
FOUNTAIN VALLEY - 01/30/05 - Korean auto giant Hyundai Motor Company has opened its first US proving ground in California City, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert.
The new 4,300-acre, $60-million facility will serve as the test site for the company's newest generation of cars destined primarily for North American markets, according to a company press release.
Construction on the test track began in February of last year. The grounds include a 6.4-mile oval track, two million square-foot Vehicle Dynamics Area (VDA), a 2.75-mile winding track, a 3.3-mile hill road and various special surface roads constructed to duplicate US highways.
The proving ground also includes a 30,000 square-foot office complex that will provide working space for about 50 staffers, the company said.
The company's North American subsidiary - Hyundai Motor America (HMA) - is headquartered in the Orange County, California community of Fountain Valley with additional regional offices in Jamesburg, New Jersey; Austell, Georgia; and Aurora, Illinois. In 1988, HMA opened a $21 million, 300,000 square-foot parts distribution center in Ontario, California to facilitate parts deliveries to Hyundai's expanding network of more than 600 dealerships throughout the US.
In addition to its North American corporate offices, the headquarters also houses the company's Western US regional office, its National Service Center, and the Hyundai Motor Finance Co.
