ACTING US TRADE REPRESENTATIVE NAMED

WASHINGTON, DC - 02/23/05 - President Bush has appointed Peter Allgeier to be Acting US Trade Representative to fill in for Robert Zoellick who has been named Deputy Secretary of State.

An economist, Allgeier (left) served as a Deputy US Trade Representative and has served in a variety of trade-related government postings since 1980.
 
According to sources, the short list for the final appointee includes Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Grant Aldonas; Josette Shiner, another deputy trade representative; Gary Edsen, assistant to the president for international economic affairs; and Robert Kimmitt, former US ambassador to Germany and an executive vice president at Time Warner.

Zoellick is returning to the State Department where he was Undersecretary for Economic Affairs in the administration of President Bush's father, George H.W. Bush.
 
As US Trade Representative he completed negotiations that brought China and Taiwan into the World Trade Organization, and successfully completed free trade agreements with Singapore, Chile, Australia, Morcoco, five Central American countries, the Dominican Republic, and Bahrain.

California Software Nabs Seychelles Contract

04/18/05 – The Seychelles Marketing Board (SMB) has awarded a contract to the California Software Corp. to integrate its national call center with
back-end computer software systems. The project is the first undertaken by the Indian Ocean-island nation’s recently-created SMB and will involve the organization of its fundamental business processes by integrating and developing more than 20 ''workflows.''


Euronet Expands into Southern California

04/15/05 – Transaction processor Euronet Worldwide Inc. has said it will expand its presence in Southern California through an agreement with CJK Inc., a Santa Fe Springs-based distributor of prepaid phone cards. The deal calls for PaySpot Inc., a subsidiary of Leawood, Kansas.-headquartered Euronet, to provide point-of-sale terminals to CJK for their 8,000 convenience stores where scratch-off phone cards are sold.


Sea Launch Plans Newest Satellite Launch

04/11/05 – The DIRECTV Group has scheduled a late April launch for a satellite aboard a Sea Launch rocket.

NESTLE TO RESTRUCTURE US OPERATIONS

GLENDALE – 04/3/05 – Nestle Inc has decided to close three US candy plants in the St. Louis area, consolidate more than half of its production to two plants in Illinois, and move about 40% of its total production to an existing facility in Saltio, Mexico.


MATSON TO RE-ENTER TRANSPAC CONTAINER TRADES

SAN FRANCISCO – 04/1/05 – Matson Navigation Company has said it will invest $365 million in vessel, container and terminal assets to launch a new Guam and China service beginning in February 2006 when its present ten-year alliance agreement expires with transpacific container carrier American President Lines (APL).
