California Economic Development Group Lauded
STOCKTON - 05/05/05 - California's San Joaquin Partnership has been selected as one of the country's Top Economic Development Groups of 2004 by Site Selection Magazine.
The San Joaquin Partnership serves as a consortium of local economic development agencies representing communities such as Stockton, Tracy, Ripon, Manteca, and Lodi in California's north-central San Joaquin County (SJC).
Economic activity in the county is centered on Stockton, which, along with its deep-water port, forms a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) with the nearby City of Lodi.
The county is within an hour's drive of the San Francisco Bay Area, the high-tech center of San Jose, and the state capital of Sacramento
Last summer, the Partnership created a website - www.sjpnet.org - with an on-line property database that offers a comprehensive listing throughout the county, as well as a 15-minute DVD that features an aerial tour of the county and its available industrial and commercial sites.
The effort to market the county has paid off handsomely with new capital investment in the county totaling almost $160 million last year.
In addition, more than 2,700 jobs have been created as several global companies including BMW, the MarMaxx Group, Dreyers, and Pflug Packaging built logistics distribution centers in SJC.
At the same time, substantial development investment was generated by a variety of companies including Sierra Building Products, Eagle Roofing Products, Calstone, Golden State Lumber, LFB Engineered Products, ATI Windows, and Prima Products.
According to Site Selection, manufacturers have said they like San Joaquin "for its modern transportation system, convenient Central Valley location, enterprise zone tax credits and local incentives, skilled work force, 12 fully serviced industrial parks, inland deep water port, affordable housing, and abundance of cultural and recreational opportunities."
The Partnership's next goal "is to develop an economic development strategy targeting knowledge-based job development," said Michael Locke, president and CEO of the Partnership, in an interview with the magazine.
