RETRACTION: QUALCOMM STORY INACCURATE
LOS ANGELES – 11/13/06 – The recent story appearing in the CalTrade Report outlining a European Commission investigation of San Diego-based Qualcomm is inaccurate and has been retracted.
According to Christine Trimble, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at Qualcomm, the European Union has, to the company’s knowledge, been not given the "go-ahead" to investigate Qualcomm.
The story stated that the European Commission “recently notified Qualcomm …. that it would open a formal probe … by the end of the year”.
There has been no notification, formal or otherwise about the investigation, and there is no timing fixed for this step, said Trimble, adding the Commission “is still deliberating the matter.”
Please note, said Trimble, “that the concept of a ‘formal’ investigation is a term of art that means that the Commission is working towards issuing a ‘statement of objections’ (similar to an indictment) but that we are far from this point in process.”
The stage the company is at “is an administrative step where the Commission takes an internal decision on how to allocate resources in a case. It is not a substantive assessment of the merits.”
“However, due to intense media scrutiny, this stage in the process has taken on a life of its own and is being seen as more significant than it is,” said Trimble. “From a substantive case perspective, this stage is actually neither here nor there.”
The CalTrade Report has rendered a formal apology to Qualcomm with sincere regret for any misunderstanding resulting from the original story.
