DISNEY TO EXPAND CRUISE LINE FLEET

BURBANK – 03/12/07 – The Walt Disney Company reportedly plans to expand its successful cruise business by adding two new ocean liners to its fleet.

Scheduled to launch in 2011 and 2012, the ships will more than double the passenger capacity for Disney Cruise Line β€œto meet the sustained demand for Disney's family cruise vacations,” according to a company media release.

The company has signed a letter of intent with the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, to negotiate a contract to build the new 122,000-ton cruise liners, which will be two decks taller than the existing 83,000-ton ships, the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder.

Similar to the original Disney Cruise Line ships, β€œthe new ships will be a modern interpretation of classic ocean liners of the 1930s with each boasting 1,250 staterooms,” the release said.

Although specific design plans and itineraries for the two new ships are still in development, cruise industry sources say that it seems almost certain at least one of the ships will be based in Los Angeles.

It is estimated the two new ships will cost more than $800 million apiece to build, compared with the estimated $500 million dollars it cost to build the cruise lines’ first two vessels more than a decade ago.
