CALIFORNIA WINE EXPORTS SURGE IN 2007

SAN FRANCISCO – 03/21/08 – California wines set a record for overseas sales revenue last year with about a fifth of the state’s bottled wine shipments headed to overseas markets, according to the San Francisco-based Wine Institute.

The state currently produces about 95% of US wine exports, which rose nearly 9% to $951 million last year, the trade group said, adding that wine exports to Canada and several Asian countries surged by at least 20% in 2007.

Surprisingly, almost half of US wine shipments go to the European Union, which accounted for $474 million in sales, followed by Canada at $234 million, Japan at $63 million, Switzerland at $26 million, and Mexico at $24 million.

Other major growth markets for California-produced wine include South Korea, up 60% to $18 million during the year; China, up 74% to $16 million; and Singapore, up 50% to $9 million.

Over the last decade, overall US wine exports increased 77% in value and were shipped to 125 countries, the trade group said.
