"VISIT JAPAN" CAMPAIGN TO LURE TOURISTS
TOKYO - The Japanese government will invest in a $17 million "Visit Japan" campaign to lure more foreign travelers. The campaign is aimed at meeting Prime Minister Koizumi's goal of luring 10 million foreign travelers to the country by 2010. The biggest problems that Japan faces in meeting this goal, analysts said, are its strict visa policy, the relatively high cost of visiting the country, and the lack of "tourist friendly" infrastructure. The Transport Ministry in Tokyo estimates that 10 million foreign travelers would create 480,000 jobs and have an economic impact worth $69 billion. QANTAS OFFERS REDUCED FARES TO AUSTRALIA
LOS ANGELES - Qantas Airways is offering reduced fares between Los Angeles and Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia. The prices represent a savings of up to 42% off regular fares. As an added bonus, travelers who book this fare will receive a $25 "Bonus Bucks" rebate for in-flight purchases of $50 or more. From May 29 to June 17, 2003, and August 1 to 31, 2003, passengers from Los Angeles can travel to Sydney or Melbourne from just $368 each way, based on round trip purchase. For an additional $10 each way, passengers can get a jumpstart on their spring and summer travel to Australia from now until May 28. Travel must include a minimum stay of seven days and a maximum stay of one month. Reservations must be confirmed at the time of ticketing and tickets are non-refundable. Once ticketed, re-routing or re-booking is not permitted. All fares are subject to change without notice, may not be available on all services and other restrictions apply. Prices do not include taxes, surcharges and other required facility and security fees.
