US SIGNS AGRICULTURAL MOU WITH MEXICO WASHINGTON, DC - The US and Mexico will cooperate on biotechnology, conservation efforts under the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding recently signed by Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman and Mexico's Environment and Natural Resources Secretary, Victor Lichtinger.
The MOU was crafted to "to create permanent bilateral working groups for cooperation in biotechnology, water resources, forest resources, sustainable rural development and environmental services," according to a press release issued by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect in 1994, two-way agricultural trade between the US and Mexico increased more than 100%, reaching $12.8 billion in 2002. This increased agricultural trade has also expanded technical and scientific exchanges between the two countries, along with creating a network of contacts between US and Mexican research institutions. "This MOU is one way to help formalize these relationships," the release said.
