AVANEX COMPLETES ALCATEL FRANCE, CORNING ACQUISITION
FREMONT - Avanex Corp.has finalized the acquisition of Alcatel Optronics France SA, a subsidiary of Alcatel that operates the optical components division of Alcatel, and the purchase of certain assets of the photonic technologies business of Corning Inc. According to a spokesman for Avanex, these acquisitions are part of the company's plan "to become a major player in the global intelligent photonic solutions field and provide the industry with a full range of solutions and technologies in passive and active optics, optoelectronics integration, and software and interface controls."
The combined company is headquartered in Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area, and includes former Alcatel facilities in France and Scotland and former Corning facilities in the US and Italy.
SAMSUNG DENIES PLAN TO BUILD ELECTRONICS PARK IN N. KOREA
SEOUL - The Samsung Group has denied reports that it has plans to set up an electronics complex in Kaesong, North Korea. Kim Yoon-kyu, president of Hyundai Asan, had said earlier in the day his company had proposed that Samsung should build an electronics park in Kaesong, housing some 1,200 South Korean small firms. "We are unable to make an investment [in North Korea]," a Samsung official said. "We can only study large-scale investment in the North after North Korea completely guarantees investment and allows free communications, passage and use of currency."
EXTREME LOGIC OPENS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA OFFICE
ATLANTA - e-business solutions provider Extreme Logic has opened an office in Santa Monica, near Los Angeles, to extend services throughout the US.
Extreme Logic Vice President Simon Donovan will head the company's West Coast expansion.
Most recently, Donovan was Extreme Logic's "ambassador" to Microsoft, maintaining the firm's strategic alignment and close relationship with the Seattle-based multi-national giant.
Previously, Simon ran Extreme Logic's New York practice for three years, growing it from a small training center to a multi- million dollar operation -- including managing several large financial services industry clients.
Extreme Logic was recently named Microsoft's Partner of the Year for North America and one of that company's Gold Certified Partners. The company designs, builds and delivers business solutions, focusing on advanced technical strategies, business process design, application development and technical architecture. SUN AND SuSE CREATE GLOBAL ALLIANCE SANTA CLARA - Moving to expand the reach of their Java and Linuz technologies, Sun Microsystems Inc. and SuSE Linux have formed a global marketing alliance.
Specific details of the agreement were not released to the press.
SuSE Linux is privately-held and produces Open Source operating systems software. Sun Microsystems Inc. was founded in 1982 and provides "industrial-strength" hardware, software and services to customers in more than 100 countries and on the world wide web.
