MANUFACTURING - August 15 to August 31, 2003

SILICON SHIPMENTS HIGHER THAN PREVIOUS QUARTER

SAN JOSE - Worldwide silicon wafer area shipments increased by 8% during the second quarter of 2003 when compared to the first quarter of the year, according to the  SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG).

Total silicon wafer area shipments were 1.23 million square inches during the most recent quarter, up from the 1.17 million square inches shipped during the previous quarter. The new quarterly total area shipments are equal to second quarter 2002 area shipments.

Silicon wafers are the fundamental building material for semiconductors, which in turn, are vital components of virtually all electronics goods, including computers, telecommunications products, and consumer electronics. The highly engineered thin round disks are produced in various diameters - from one inch to 12 inches - and serve as the substrate material on which more than 98% of today's semiconductor devices or "chips" are fabricated.

The SMG is comprised of firms that produce polycrystalline silicon, monocrystalline silicon or silicon wafers. SMG participant companies collectively represent more than 95% of the total worldwide semiconductor silicon production.

SEMI is a global industry association serving more than 2,500 companies that develop and provide manufacturing technology and materials to the global semiconductor, flat panel display, MEMS and related microelectronics industries.

San Jose-based SEMI maintains offices in Austin, Beijing, Brussels, Hsinchu, Moscow, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo and Washington, DC.

NAM, FEDEX COOPERATE ON SHIPPING PROGRAM

WASHINGTON, DC - The National Association of Manufacturers and FedEx have  signed an agreement that will make an array of FedEx air, ground and international shipping services available to the trade association's members across the country.

The new Freight Alliance Program gives NAM members discounted access to FedEx's menu of air, ground and international shipping services.

The association is the nation's largest industrial trade association representing 14,000 members - including 10,000 small and mid-sized companies - and 350 member associations in every industrial sector and all 50 states.

Headquartered in Washington, DC, the NAM has 10 additional offices across the country.

MEXICO VEHICLE PRODUCTION, CAR EXPORTS FALL IN JULY

MEXICO CITY - Mexico's auto industry production and exports fell in July as car makers eased output on the back of lower sales demand in the US, according to the country's leading national auto industry group.

Mexico produced 114,316 vehicles in the month of July, down from the 137,798 produced in the same month in 2002, the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) has said.
Exports by Mexico-based automakers totaled 92,779 units in July, down 10.3% from the 103,485 in the same month last year.

Mexico, which manufactured 1.774 million autos in 2002 down 2.4% from 2001, is the 10th largest auto producer in the world.

Major makers in the country include General Motors; Ford; Volkswagen AG; and DaimlerChrisyler AG.
