TECHNOLOGY / TELECOMMUNICATIONS / BIOTECHNOLOGY - September 16 to September 30, 2003

CISCO SYSTEMS RECORDS INCREASED BACKLOG

SAN JOSE - Cisco Systems, one of the world's biggest internet equipment makers, said on Wednesday its order backlog was up 14 per cent from last year, another indication the company's business is starting to stabilize.

Cisco's backlog, which measures orders it has accepted and are due to be shipped within 90 days, was about $1.6 billion on September 8, up from about $1.4 billion on September 9 2002, the company said in its annual 10K regulatory filing.

The company discloses its order backlog once a year in its annual filing, providing a key glimpse of business conditions in August and part of September.

The backlog figure is consistent with comments from John Chambers, the group's chief executive, who said last week that Cisco's sales in August had been slightly better than expected.

Cisco is widely seen as a bellwether for the technology sector and an indicator of spending by governments and large corporations, which comprise most of the company's customers.

CURON MEDICAL RELOCATES TO FREMONT

FREMONT - Curon Medical Inc. has completed the relocation of its headquarters and manufacturing facility from Sunnyvale, CA to the nearby Bay Area city of Fremont.

The move to the new facility - just 12 miles from the previous one - will reportedly increase the size of the company's facility by 65%, while reducing its facility costs by 40%.

Curon Medical Inc. develops, manufactures and markets globally proprietary products for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.

The company's products and products-under-development consist of radio-frequency generators and single use disposable devices.

Its first product, the Stretta System, received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance in April, 2000 for the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD.
