TRANSPORTATION / LOGISTICS - October 1 to October 15, 2003

CHILEAN CARRIER TO EXPAND FLEET

SANTIAGO - Chile's national ocean, Chile SudAmerica Vapores SA (CSAV) , has added seven state-of-the-art vessels to its container fleet.

The move "will improve our ability to provide a better and ampler service to our customers strengthening our presence in the global market," according to a company press release.

The investment consists of two containerships each with a capacity of 3,100 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), for delivery in September and December of this year; three vessels with a capacity of 5,500 TEUs each, for delivery in January, May, and August, 2005; and two ships with a capacity of 4,050 TEUs each for delivery in April and July, 2005.

PACER INTERNATIONAL MOVE CARTAGE UNIT

CONCORD - Pacer International Inc. has transferred its Los Angeles-based local trucking operation to its wholesale division, Pacer Stacktrain.

The cartage unit was previously part of the third-part logistics company's retail division, known as Pacer Global Logistics.

Pacer Stacktrain provides double-stacked rail and related transportation services, including cartage, for containerized freight, serving intermodal marketing companies (IMCs) and other transportation intermediaries. Pacer Global Logistics (PGL) provides logistics and transportation services directly to manufacturers and retailers.

PGL, itself an intermodal marketing company, will become a customer of the Pacer Cartage operation, as well, so access to local trucking services will remain seamless for retail customers.

Pacer's cartage unit currently consists of more than 600 trucks that are predominantly owner-operator units accounting for more than 300,000 local moves annually, and operates from terminals in 17 cities.

These cartage hubs include City of Industry, Lathrop, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Rancho Dominguez in California; Houston, TX; Jacksonville, FL; Chicago, IL; Columbus and Marysville, OH; Memphis, TN; Kansas City, KS; Charleston, SC; Portland, OR; and Atlanta, Savannah, and Dalton, Georgia. Other hubs are currently planned.

Additionally, through another business unit known as Conex, Pacer also provides cartage services in Seattle, WA, and San Diego.
