LORAL REJECTS PURCHASE OFFER; SELLS SATELLITES

PALO ALTO - Loral Space & Communications, which most recently agreed to sell six of its satellites to Washington-based Intelsat after filing for bankruptcy court protection, has rejected a $1.85 billion purchase offer from EchoStar Communications.

Loral said the offer by EchoStar, which runs Dish Network, the second-largest US  satellite television service, undervalues its assets. Loral wants to keep its satellite services and manufacturing businesses and sell only its North American satellites.

The company has agreed to sell six satellites to Intelsat for about $1.1 billion.

Earlier this month Loral reportedly won a $220 million order to build satellites for DirecTV, EchoStar's larger rival.
