TECHNOLOGY / TELECOMMUNICATIONS / BIOTECHNOLOGY - December 1 to December 15, 2003

US AEROSPACE TRADE HEAD SLAMS EU "BELLIGERENCE"

WASHINGTON, DC - The President of the Aerospace Industries Association, John Douglass, believes that the EU's "belligerence" over steel tariffs and tax reform could harm commercial aviation trade.

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Douglass said there was an emerging feeling in the US that "some countries, mainly France and Germany, and occasionally Canada, exploit the US market."

Douglass said Washington "gives equal treatment to Airbus and they [the Europeans] reap huge economic benefit from the US market, at the same time as [France and Germany] fight us in the UN and around the world. If that continues, don't you think trade would be affected by that, and sooner or later we could say we are not going to give them access?"

In Douglass' opinion, "There is nervousness about the saber-rattling by the EU on trade issues. People are getting tired of [cases being taken] to the WTO  and every other damn thing that comes down the pike. There will be a reaction to the economic belligerence by the EU . . . every time we see [EU trade commissioner] Pascal Lamy threaten to sue us over something it runs against the grain of how Americans think about Europe. It is like a neighbor who is constantly calling the cops and complaining."

CONFLUENT SOFTWARE EXPANDS OPERATIONS IN EUROPE

SUNNYVALE - Web services management company Confluent Software Inc. has expanded operations into Europe "to satisfy growing customer demand for Confluent's Web services management solutions."

Strong demand "for enterprise-wide management of highly distributed application environments in North America has led to a sustained trajectory of growth for Confluent and fueled the company's expansion Europe," said a spokesman for the company.

Vincent Schoen has been hired to head the company's operations in Europe.

Before joining Confluent, Schoen served as partner manager for Intershop AG, a German software vendor, where he was responsible for sales and partner relations. Prior to Intershop, he oversaw sales and partner relations throughout Europe and the Middle East for BEA, Inc.

Schoen has also held key sales and engineering positions with computer manufacturer Digital Equipment France, a computer manufacturer recently acquired by Hewlett-Packard Inc., and Renault, the leading French automaker.

He earned a Bachelor's degree in computer science from Universite Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France and his Master's degree in computer science from Paris' Universite Pierre et Marie Curie.
