MANUFACTURING - December 15 to December 31, 2003

CANADIAN FIRM ACQUIRES STAKE IN CAL ROBOT MAKER

MENLO PARK - Ontario,Canada-based ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. has acquired a technology license from Innovative Robotics Systems as well as a small stake in the California robot company.

The Canadian industrial systems maker said the license gives it the right to manufacture, modify and integrate Innovative Robotics IR-800 robot technology within ATS systems. The deal is valued at about $1 million.

Innovative Robotics, based in Menlo Park, is a privately held company specializing in designing and manufacturing assembly robotic systems for the semiconductor industry. The company's IR-800 robot was originally developed for use in ultra-clean environments, such as semiconductor wafer handling.

In addition to the license, ATS said it has also acquired a 3.0% stake in Innovative Robotics and has been granted the exclusive manufacturing and supply contract for the IR-800 family of robots.

ATS makes automated manufacturing and test systems and other precision components. It employs about 3,500 people at 25 plants in Canada, Europe, Asia, and the US.
