TRADE - January 15 to January 31, 2004

TAIWAN TRADE AGENCY GETS NEW NAME

TAIPEI, Taiwan - The China External Trade Development Council (CETRA) is now known as the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) "to further enhance its image as the foremost trade promotion organization in Taiwan," according to a press release distributed by the trade promotion agency.

Established in 1970, CETRA has promoted Taiwan's bilateral trade of Taiwan, but, the release said, the use of the name "China" for the past 33 years has incorrectly caused the agency to be associated with mainland China.

The newly named agency will integrate the promotion of Taiwan's inbound/outbound investment and tourism industry, as well as expanding markets for agricultural products to the already wide spectrum of its existing trade promotion services, the release said.

TAITRA maintains an office in the San Francisco Bay Area / Silicon Valley community of Santa Clara.

Of the "key" programs, 103 are funded through domestic investment with the remaining 19 funded through foreign investment, with a total investment of $2.5 billion in fixed assets.

For more effective and efficient development procedures, the district has established some ''Green Channels'' for more than 30 key programs.

At present, 48 programs have begun construction, or have been completed or launched. Other programs are currently obtaining approval from the District government.

Previously known as Jinshan County, and established 277 years ago, Jinshan District now covers Jinshan County and the Sinopec Shanghai Jinshan Industrial Company.

It was the first district to be established on the outskirts of Shanghai in May, 1997.
