HONG KONG LIFTS BAN ON US-SOURCED POULTRY

WASHINGTON, DC - Hong Kong has reopened its market to US poultry exports, according to the US Department of Commerce.

The Special Administrative Region (SAR) Hong Kong currently ranks as the third largest market for US-produced poultry products.

"We have worked very hard to provide full assurances to Hong Kong's scientists on the
thorough mitigation measures taken to contain and eradicate avian influenza and we appreciate that Hong Kong bases its food safety standards on internationally accepted scientific principles," said Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman.

Hong Kong's purchases of poultry meat from the US totaled $219 million in 2003 with the US supplying over half of the poultry consumed in the SAR.

The lifting of the ban doesn't apply to products sourced in Texas, "but discussions will continue to ensure total access for US poultry producers," Veneman said.
