TRANSPORTATION / LOGISTICS - October 15 to October 31, 2004

FEDEX PARTNERS WITH CALIFORNIA COMPANY

SUNNYVALE - Expedited air express giant Federal Express has said Opsware Inc. will provide it with shipping and information software "to establish a consistent baseline across their server and application infrastructure, an important foundation for realizing speed and future utility computing initiatives."

According to a FedEx spokesman, "The Opsware System offers an IT automation solution that is proven to work in large, distributed environments and can integrate with our existing infrastructure."

When deployed, he said, the Opsware System will provide FedEx with an automated process for initial server builds, as well as an automated process for recovering servers, replacing many other manual tasks.

UNION PACIFIC ORDERS NEW LOCOMOTIVES

OMAHA, Nebraska - The Union Pacific Railroad has ordered 315 diesel-electric locomotives designed to significantly decrease air emissions.

The new low-emission locomotives will satisfy US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "railroad Tier 2" emission regulations that become effective January 1, 2005.

Currently, about 35% of the railroads' 7,800-plus-unit locomotive fleet is certified under existing EPA Tier 0 and Tier 1 regulations that govern air emissions.

The new 1ocomotives produce approximately the same horsepower as existing locomotives, but will reduce air emissions as much as 40%.

Delivery of the new locomotives to the UP - one of the two major rail carriers serving California - is scheduled in the first half of 2005.
