China Southern Airlines has taken delivery of a new Boeing 737-700 series aircraft to be used by its Zhuhai Airlines subsidiary. According to the air carrier, the aircraft is the seventeenth of 20 Boeing 737-800/700 aircraft ordered by the company. The new aircraft is the second brand-new Boeing 737-700 "Next Generation" airplane to be added to the Zhuhai air fleet. China Southern is the country's largest airline connecting major points in China with more than 80 cities around the globe including Amsterdam, Bangkok, Fukuoka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Islamabad, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Los Angeles, Manila, Melbourne, Moscow, Osaka, Paris, Penang, Phnom Penh, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo…
The Port of Redwood City handled a record high 572,718 metric tons during the first quarter of the fiscal year. The increased trade with Asia for scrap metal, a strong demand for construction materials from China and the Pacific Northwest, and the improving US economy were cited as factors propelling the increase in tonnage at all West Coast ports and an even higher percentage increase at the San Francisco Bay Area port. Coming off of a record 1.5 million tons last fiscal year, the 572,718 tons that crossed port's docks between July 1 and September 30 was higher than anticipated. The first quarter of the year saw 47 vessels call on the port, up from 22 during the same period last year. According to port officials, the outlook for the second quarter is "very good," with projected cargo through just the end of November is 825,000 metric tons, up from the actual 741, 333 metric tons for the first half of last fiscal year… The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has finalized its tentative decision and formally selected Polar Air Cargo, as the next US-based all-cargo carrier to serve China under the US-China aviation agreement signed earlier this year. The final order grants Polar the right to operate six weekly frequencies between China and the US for the remainder of 2004, expanding to nine weekly frequencies in 2005. When final approval is granted by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), Polar will provide transpacific, all-cargo scheduled service connecting Shanghai with New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Anchorage. The new service will also operate through Polar's scheduled service hub in Seoul, Korea, permitting connecting service between China and multiple points in Asia, Europe, and South America served by Polar's global network; and…
Transpacific container carrier Wan Hai Shipping has reportedly ordered five 4,250 TEU ships from Taiwan's CSBC shipyard. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in October of next year, with the remaining vessels following in two- month intervals. The new ships are slated to replace the carrier's current fleet of ships that have a capacity of 2,500 TEUs each.
