A memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been signed between Agilent Technologies Inc. and the South Korean government to establish a research center here for wireless communications parts and equipment. South Korea is Asia's third-biggest mobile phone market, with more than 36 million people of it's 48 million population having cellular phones. The agreement was reached at a recent meeting between South Korea's Information and Communication minister Chin Dae-je and Agilent chief executive Ned Barnholt. While Palo Alto-based Agilent didn't say how much it would spend on the new research lab in Seoul, the company did hint that the new Korean research center could house 20 to 30 research staff, making it similar in size to its Chinese research lab. Korea is the company's fourth largest market and discussions are underway to build a plant to produce high-luminescence light-emitting diode screens used in mobile phones and other handheld digital appliances in Gwangju, some 300 miles south of Seoul in the southwest of the peninsula. Agilent is a spin-off of the Hewlett-Packard Co. and has operations in 110 countries worldwide with some 28,000 employees.
