TRANSPORTATION / LOGISTICS - December 15 to December 31, 2004

Transpacific carrier P&O Nedlloyd has said it will introduce a global "carrier security charge" of $6 per container, effective January 1 "in order to meet the costs incurred to comply with the requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code."  In addition, the company said, Origin and Destination Terminal Security Charges will be passed on separately "as, and when, they are applied to P&O Nedlloyd by terminal operators / port authorities." A joint venture of Manson Construction Inc. and Connolly-Pacific has completed a $74 million project at the Port of Long Beach that extended the length of the Pier T wharf at the Total Terminals International's (TTI) 375-acre container terminal to nearly one mile. The 18-month-long, dredging and wharf extension project created a 5,000-foot-long wharf by adding a 1,300-foot section that will give TTI the ability to work as many as four vessels simultaneously. The project was recently honored by the Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors of California, which have awarded Manson and Connolly-Pacific with its 2004 Golden State Award - the highest recognition bestowed by the statewide industry organization. The honor will be presented at the CELSOC Engineering Excellence Award Banquet in January. As the California award recipient, the project automatically becomes a nominee for the national American Council of Engineering Companies competition.
