Cattle exports from Canada to the US - banned in May 2003 because of mad cow disease - will resume as early as March, according to the US Department of Agriculture. According to the agency, the recent decision will allow Canada to ship cattle under 30 months of age and beef from animals of any age. Currently, only boneless cuts of beef from younger animals are allowed. The rule also recognizes Canada as being at minimal-risk for mad cow disease, the first country to be so designated. Canada exported 1.7 million head of cattle to the US in 2002, about 4.7% of the annual slaughter. The ban caused a cattle glut in Canada that cost producers an estimated $4.2 billion I lost sales, the Bank of Montreal said in a study released in November…

Hormel Foods Corp., the nation's largest turkey processor, has acquired Clougherty Packing Co., the privately held Southern California pork processor and maker of the Farmer John brand of pork products, for about $186 million. The company said the transaction will "help strengthen its presence in the Southwest," and plans to add the Farmer John brand to its Herdez, Dona Maria and Bufalo brand products. San Diego-based Discovery Partners (DPI) and Sweden's Biovitrum AB (BAB) have entered into a drug discovery and development alliance to jointly identify small molecule lead compounds suitable for advancing targets within the metabolic disease area. Under the terms of this agreement, Biovitrum will get access to DPI's comprehensive compound collection and its proprietary process and data management tools. Financial terms of the collaboration were not disclosed. BAB is a privately held biotechnology company headquartered in Stockholm focusing on the discovery and development of innovative drugs, primarily for the treatment of metabolic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and obesity. DPI offers integrated services, products, and systems to pharmaceutical companies and has operations in India, and the European Union, as well as the US.
