The Port of Long Beach is launching a major business outreach program that will provide millions of dollars in contract opportunities to thousands of Southern California small businesses. The port's new Small Business Enterprise Program was created in cooperation with the Metropolitan Water District (MWD), which will share small business contractor information. The MWD has operated one of the region's most successful small business outreach programs with more than 2,000 businesses participating. The agreement will pool the port and MWD contractor lists. Businesses signed up with the port SBE program will then be available to MWD and their partners as possible contractors. In turn, contractors already on the MWD list would be available for port contracts. The program is designed to increase the number of small businesses working on port contracts. Last year, slightly more than 60 small businesses worked on nearly $20 million in port contracts, or 10% of the 2004 total. Matson Integrated Logistics (MIL) has acquired Aquitaine Assets Ltd., a Houston-based freight transportation management and technology company. Founded in 2001, Aquitaine provides three services throughout North America, rail intermodal, technology, and highway brokerage. The technology services offered include a web-based pricing and routing system that was developed in-house, while its highway brokerage service includes full truckload and expedited. Aquitaine's four founding partners will be retained, as well as the current nine-member management team. In 2004, Aquitaine generated over $20 million in revenue. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. MIL is a subsidiary of Matson Navigation Company, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. of Honolulu.
